I spent thirty years at the front desk of an elementary school in Pennsylvania, and twenty-five years fostering and adopting rescue cats. Strays from the back porch, a barn cat who hid under my bed for most of a year, bottle kittens on the kitchen table at 2 in the morning. Right now it's Pepper, who is 16 with stiff hips, Moose, a big orange foster who never left, and Birdie, the shy one.

I'm not a vet, and I won't pretend to be. What I have is years of getting it wrong first. Oscar, my first rescue, lived to nineteen, and I made most of the mistakes in this book with him. This is what I wish someone had written down for me back then, in plain words, with the cheap fix. When it's something for your vet, I say so.

Is this a printed book you mail me?
No, and I want you to know that before you spend a dime. It is a PDF: a file you open on your phone, your tablet or your computer the moment you pay. Nothing comes in the mail. I've had cats all my life. Will I learn anything?
I thought I knew it all too, and I'd had cats for years. Then I moved Oscar's water bowl and watched him drink more that same week. This book is full of small things like that. Nobody tells you them, because cats keep quiet. If you already do most of them, good. You'll know you're doing it right, and you'll find the few you missed.
Will I have to buy a lot of new things?
No. I live in a small house on a fixed income, and so do most of my fixes. A lot of them are free, like moving a bowl or changing when you play. The rest use things from the hardware store or the kitchen drawer. Nothing in this book needs a catio or a room full of cat trees.
Is this a vet book?
No. I'm not a vet, and this book does not replace yours. It is what I've learned living with cats for twenty-five years. Where something could mean your cat is in pain or sick, I say plainly to call your vet, and I tell you what to watch for so you can tell them clearly.
I am not good with computers.
